Management Is Not Freedom

Many of us mistake management for freedom.

We manage our anxiety by staying busy. We manage our fear by controlling outcomes. We manage our pain by avoiding difficult conversations. We manage our finances, relationships, emotions, and even our spiritual struggles with the hope that if we can just keep everything under control, we'll finally experience peace.

But management is not freedom.

Management requires constant effort. It keeps us in a cycle of monitoring, adjusting, fixing, and worrying. The very thing we're trying to control often ends up controlling us. We become exhausted carrying burdens we were never designed to carry.

Jesus never invited us to manage our burdens. He invited us to surrender them.

In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Notice that He doesn't offer better management techniques. He offers rest.

There is a profound difference between holding something in your hands and placing it at the feet of Jesus. When it's in your hands, you're responsible for carrying the weight. When it's at His feet, you've acknowledged that He is capable of handling what you cannot.

Many people are asking God for freedom while refusing to release what is keeping them bound. We want peace, but we continue to rehearse our worries. We want healing, but we continue to hold onto unforgiveness. We want breakthrough, but we insist on controlling the process.

Freedom begins where surrender starts.

The woman with the alabaster box experienced freedom when she poured out what she had at the feet of Jesus. Mary found freedom sitting at His feet instead of being consumed by responsibilities. Time and time again throughout Scripture, transformation happens when people bring their burdens, fears, failures, and expectations to Jesus and leave them there.

The challenge for many of us is not bringing things to Jesus—it's leaving them there.

We pray about a situation and then pick it right back up. We surrender it on Sunday and reclaim it on Monday. Yet true freedom requires trust. It requires believing that God is more committed to our well-being than we are and that His ability far exceeds our own.

What are you managing that God is asking you to surrender?

Perhaps it's a relationship. A financial burden. A dream that hasn't come to pass. A wound that still hurts. Whatever it is, Jesus is inviting you to exchange the weight of management for the rest that comes through surrender.

Because freedom is not found in having everything under control.

Freedom is found at the feet of Jesus.
