Yes and Afraid

This week I am studying and meditating on Judges 6.

During my devotional, I noticed something interesting about Gideon. When the Angel appeared to him, Gideon was hiding, yet the Angel still called him “brave and mighty.” Then God gave him an assignment, and even in carrying it out, Gideon still showed fear. Scripture says he went at night to tear down the altar of Baal because he was afraid of being seen.

What stood out to me is this: Gideon’s fear didn’t stop God from choosing him, and it didn’t stop Gideon from obeying God.

Sometimes we think fear disqualifies us, but obedience in the middle of fear is still obedience. God is not waiting for us to become fearless before He uses us. He’s looking for a willing YES.

God was calling Gideon out and up.

The Angel wasn’t speaking to the fearful, hiding version of Gideon he saw in the moment, He was speaking to the version of Gideon that God created him to be.

Sometimes God will call ou according to our purpose, not our present condition.

In transition,
