You Can't Escape Your Own Story

Have you ever noticed how hard we work to outrun parts of our story?

We stay busy. We bury ourselves in work. We avoid certain conversations. We tell ourselves, "That happened a long time ago," or "I'm over it." But no matter how fast we run, our story has a way of catching up with us.

One of the themes I explore in my upcoming book, Beautifully Broken, is that transformation doesn't begin when we hide our story. It begins when we surrender it to God.

In the chapter "The Lie We Lived: The Deception of Culture," I talk about how easy it is to build an identity around what we've experienced instead of around who God says we are. Culture teaches us to curate our lives, hide our pain, and pretend we're okay. But God doesn't heal the version of us we're pretending to be. He heals the real us.

For years, I thought success could silence my story. I earned degrees, accomplished goals, and checked every box I thought would finally make me feel whole. Yet God lovingly showed me that achievements could never replace healing. He wasn't interested in helping me escape my story—He wanted to redeem it.

That's the beauty of the gospel.

God never asks us to erase our past. He asks us to place it in His hands.

The places where you've experienced rejection, disappointment, failure, heartbreak, or loss don't have to become the places that define you. In Christ, they can become the places where His grace is displayed most clearly. What once felt like evidence that you were broken beyond repair can become a testimony of God's faithfulness.

You can't escape your story.

But you also don't have to be imprisoned by it.

When your story is surrendered to Jesus, it changes from something you survive into something God uses. Your wounds become a witness. Your pain develops compassion. Your testimony gives someone else the courage to believe that healing is possible.

So don't run from your story.

Invite God into it.

Because your greatest breakthrough may be waiting on the other side of your surrender.

You can't escape your own story—but through Christ, your story can become one of redemption.
